History of the Town of Summerford

  • Used in the 1800's for logging and building schooners. At that time called "Farmer's Arm"
  • Settlement began early 1890"s by the families of Thomas Wheeler, James Boyd and Elijah Wheeler. Later in the 1890's other family names such as Bulgin, Compton, Anstey, Troake, Maidment, Jenkins, Elliott, and Pelley were to be found among the settlers of that time. A lot of these names still exist in the town today.
  • Transportation in the early days was mainly by sea or horse.
  • Electricity was also not available untill the later part of the twentieth century.
  • Medical care in the early days was given by the midwife.
  • One of the early businesses was run by the French brothers.
  • In 1911 with a population of 250 the name was changed from Farmer's Arm to Summerford.
  • The first church, a Methodist church, was built and opened on January 20, 1918.
  • Incorporated as a Local Service District on September 27, 1971.
  • Status changed to Town Council  as of April 30, 1975. First election of Town Council was scheduled for November 29, 1975. However, due to only seven people being nominated the first Town Council met on November 19, 1975.
  • The first Town Council was made up by the following: Mayor Tom Wheeler, Deputy Mayor John Whalen and Councillors Harvey Bulgin, Doyle Head, Lloyd Small, Aubrey Boyd and Gerald Rideout.
